Primary Chondrosarcoma in the Liver of a Dog

Abstract: Primary chondrosarcoma was found in the quadrate lobe of the liver of a 6-year-old, intact, male Golden Retriever. At 6 months after partial hepatectomy, recurrence in the liver occurred. The dog died of its systemic metastases 10 months thereafter. Histologically, the hepatic mass revealed neoplastic chondrocytes with abundant chondroid matrix, and there were few myxoid areas where the cellularity and pleomorphism of the neoplastic cells were more prominent. The neoplastic cells were positive for periodic aci… Show more

“…Our histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings are similar to those reported previously for extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma in man and other animals [8,17,18]. In dogs, extraskeletal chondrosarcoma occurs in the lung [19], omentum [19], heart including pericardium [1,9,13,19,22], spleen [15], abdomen [20], retroperitoneum [16], and liver [3]. Most previously reported cases involved variants of extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma and occurred in adult or old dogs aged 18 months to 17 years (mean 7.8 years).…”

“…Primary chondrosarcoma has been reported in appendicular skeleton, synovium, trachea, larynx, lung, liver, subcutaneous, digit, tongue, kidney, abdominal wall, pulmonary artery, omentum, mammary gland, heart and urethra [2][3][4][6][7][8][9][10][11] . In veterinary literature, canine skeletal chondrosarcoma accounts for 1-13% of all chondrosarcomas [1,5] .…”

“…These tumors are relatively well described in the veterinary literature, having been diagnosed in most domestic species to include a variety of dog breeds 2 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , cats 1 , ferrets 9 , sheep 10 , horses 11 , cows 9 , 12 , 13 as well as single reports in the mandible of a camel 14 and the humerus of a goat 15 . In dogs, cats and horses there are occasional reports of extraskeletal chondrosarcomas described as primary to various tissues, including the retroperitoneal space 6 , the pericardium 16 , the liver 4 , spleen 5 , mammary gland 17 , tongue 18 and subcutaneous tissues 13 , 19 . In the majority of reports in domestic species, chondrosarcomas arise with greater frequency in the flat bones as opposed to the long bones.…”

“…The sternocostal complex appears to be the primary predilection site in sheep while dogs have a statistically significant predominance of tumors arising in the ribs and nasal cavity 3 . Tumor explantation from a chondrosarcoma into a body cavity has been reported in the medical literature 4 , 20 , 21 , mimicking the macroscopic presentation of malignant mesothelioma or carcinomatosis secondary to seeding from a distant epithelial tumor, but while widespread chondrosarcoma metastasis to solid organs has been described in the veterinary literature, explantation within the thoracic cavity has only been suggested once in a single animal in combination with widespread metastasis and organ invasion 12 .…”
