Primary Cardiac Tumors Causing Sudden Death: A Review of the Literature

Abstract: Sudden unexpected death accounts for 200,000-400,000 deaths each year in the United States. Although the vast majority of these fatalities are related to atherosclerotic heart disease, a small percentage (approximately 0.0025%) stem from primary cardiac neoplasms. There have been 120 cases of sudden death attributed to primary cardiac tumors in the (published) literature. Although 103 of these lesions were histologically benign (86%), their intracardiac locations precipitated conductive and hemodynamic abnorma… Show more

“…Rates of sudden death due to cardiac tumors is ∼0.06% in persons 34 years and younger. 15 Poor prognosis is associated with lesions involving the coronaries, cardiac valves, or ventricular outflow tracts. 2,5 Although serum laboratory investigations may offer some information, diagnostic imaging is the mainstay for diagnosis of cardiac tumors.…”

“…Until 1996, 120 cases of sudden death attributed to these tumors had been reported, 86% of them being histologically benign. However, the intracardiac location caused hemodynamic and conduction changes, resulting in sudden death 18 .…”

“…Primary cardiac haemangioma is an infrequent benign neoplasm which accounts for about 2% of all resected primary cardiac tumours [12,32,33]. The tumour is usually sporadic and may occur in patients of all age categories [34].…”
