Primary bronchiolo‐alveolar adenocarcinoma in a dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius)

Abstract: PRIMARY bronchiolo-alveolar adenocarcinoma is rare in domestic animals. It has been observed in cattle (Charan and others 1996), buffalo (Charan and Iyer 1978/79), dogs and cats (Walzi and Hunyady 1967, Stunzi and others 1974, Bostock and Owen 1975), but appears not to have been reported in camels. “…From 13 000 slaughtered camels, one single animal was found to have a renal cell carcinoma (Vitovec, 1982). A primary bronchiolo‐alveolar adenocarcinoma was found in a dromedary camel (Gameel et al., 1998). In other animals, like cats and horses, gastric adenocarcinomas are rare, and in cattle exceptionally uncommon (Barker et al., 1993).…”

“…Tumours have been rarely documented in captive camelids. Previous reports of neoplasia in camelids describe lymphosarcomas (Cebra et al., 1995), renal cell carcinoma (Vitovec, 1982), and bronchiolo‐alveolar adenocarcinoma (Gameel et al., 1998). Gastric adenocarcinomas are rare in domestic animals and specific risk factors are not known (Barker et al., 1993).…”
