Primary and Secondary Prevention of CAD: A Review

Abstract: Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women, yet adequate control of risk factors can largely reduce the incidence and recurrence of cardiac events. In this review, we discuss various life style and pharmacological measures for both the primary and secondary prevention of coronary artery disease. With a clear understanding of management options, health care providers have an excellent opportunity to educate patients and ameliorate a significant burden of morbidity and mortality.

“…A crucial aspect of the secondary prevention of CAD involves effectively managing the modifiable risk factors that influence the progression and recurrence of the condition. In this context, evidence-based guidelines and treatment protocols have been established to provide healthcare professionals with more precise targets and therapeutic options [ 17 ]. Pharmaceutical developments have led to the introduction of novel lipid-lowering treatments, such as PCSK9 approaches and mixed treatments, which have revealed considerable efficiency in accomplishing reduced LDL cholesterol levels alongside conventional statin treatment.…”

“…Chronic diseases require medication management and the improvement of healthy habits throughout life after an emergence, and long-term healthcare and preventive activities are essential. Coronary artery disease (CAD), which accounts for the largest proportion of heart diseases, requires careful health management because of its high risk of recurrence (even after acute treatment), rapid changes in symptoms, and high risk of emergency hospitalization [ 2 , 3 ]. In particular, the absence of health-related behavior practices of CAD patients affect not only the deterioration and recurrence of the disease, but also readmission and associated mortality [ 4 ].…”
