Pricing data center demand response

Abstract: Demand response is crucial for the incorporation of renewable energy into the grid. In this paper, we focus on a particularly promising industry for demand response: data centers. We use simulations to show that, not only are data centers large loads, but they can provide as much (or possibly more) flexibility as large-scale storage if given the proper incentives. However, due to the market power most data centers maintain, it is difficult to design programs that are efficient for data center demand response. … Show more

“…In practice, C i () is empirically measured by observing the system. According to principle of diminishing returns, as the unite amount of energy tenants save increase, the related cost will increase more and more fast [20], [21]. In reality, when tenants turn off the server, the assigning jobs to each working server increase.…”

“…The timeslot length is set to be 1 h. The simulation is carried out for a time scale of two days and the results are reported in the following section. The workload trace is taken from a commercial server farm owned by Facebook, obtained from [44] which have also been used earlier in [36]. The renewable energy trace and PUE are obtained from [44] and are also the ones used in [36].…”

“…Flexibility of large industrial customers has already been extensively assessed and exploited by long standing programs (e.g., [6,7,8,9,10]). Since the inception of the smart grid, that industrial flexibility has increasingly been complemented by residential flexibility.…”
