Previous abortion and the risk of low birth weight and preterm births

Abstract: Previous abortion is a significant risk factor for LBW and PB, and the risk increases with the increasing number of previous abortions. Practitioners should consider previous abortion as a risk factor for LBW and PB.

“…This was in agreement with previous studies (26,27) and a systematic review (28) that showed a significant relationship between miscarriage and abortion and LBW; the risk of LBW appears to increase with increasing number of previous abortions (29). The underlying biological mechanisms responsible for this association may be cervical insufficiency as a result of damage caused by stretching of the cervical canal through dilatation and curettage, and cervical and uterine adhesions as a result of post abortion complications (30,31).…”

“…We found a statistically significant difference between the cases and controls with regard to the history of previous abortion(s). Brown JS et al, (21) Chung-Chin L et al, (22) Freak-Poli R et al (23) and Gordon CS et al (24) in their study found that preterm delivery was more common among patients with history of ≥ 3 abortions than those with no history of previous abortion(s), which is consistent with our study.…”

“…Prior miscarriages are associated with preterm delivery and low birthweight. [22] Studies found that women who experienced a previous spontaneous abortion were 2.8 times more likely to have low birthweight babies and 1.7 times more likely to give birth preterm. [22] Thus the higher the number of previous miscarriages, the greater the risk of having a preterm, low birthweight infant.…”
