PREVIEW: Prevention of Diabetes through Lifestyle Intervention and Population Studies in Europe and around the World. Design, Methods, and Baseline Participant Description of an Adult Cohort Enrolled into a Three-Year Randomised Clinical Trial

Abstract: Type-2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the fastest growing chronic diseases worldwide. The PREVIEW project has been initiated to find the most effective lifestyle (diet and physical activity) for the prevention of T2D, in overweight and obese participants with increased risk for T2D. The study is a three-year multi-centre, 2 × 2 factorial, randomised controlled trial. The impact of a high-protein, low-glycaemic index (GI) vs. moderate protein, moderate-GI diet in combination with moderate or high-intensity physical a… Show more

“…The initial more restricted phase may be useful in promptly achieving targets for body weight, glycaemic control and/or nutritional ketosis to motivate patients to sustain behaviour change(s). A similar two‐phase approach was used in a large‐scale, multinational T2D prevention trial . The prescription included a very‐low‐calorie diet (~800 kcal/d) during an initial weight‐reduction phase to achieve >8% initial body weight loss before moving to a more flexible weight‐maintenance phase .…”

“…The aim was to induce weight loss of at least 8%, in order to qualify for inclusion in the randomized intervention where the focus is on longterm weight loss maintenance. 4 The majority of individuals who use weight loss programmes, including bariatric surgery, are women. 5,6 Investigating whether outcomes differ between men and women is import in developing gender-specific treatment programmes, if required.…”
