Preventive effects of Ophiocordyceps sinensis mycelium on the liver fibrosis induced by thioacetamide

Abstract: Thioacetamide (TAA), usually used as a fungicide to control the decay of citrus products, itself is not toxic to the liver, but its intermediates are able to increase oxidative stress in livers and further cause fibrosis. Ophiocordyceps sinensis mycelium (OSM) which contains 10% polysaccharides and 0.25% adenosine decreased (P < 0.05) the lipid accumulation and increased (P < 0.05) antioxidative capacity in livers of thioacetamide (TAA) injected rats. Meanwhile, the increased (P < 0.05) liver sizes, serum alan… Show more

“…The amount of biomarkers leak into the blood indicates the severity of liver damage. 49,50 The changes in serum liver biomarkers on treatment with TAA, SY, and M. elliptica are indicated in Figures 5 and 6. There were significant variations (p < .0001) between all treatment groups in the serum levels of ALP, ALT, and AST with F (4, 25) values; 3469, 3473, and 3711 respectively.…”

“…Co-treatment of CCH-As or silymarin lowered ( P < 0.05) serum ALT and ALP levels compared to the TAA group ( Table 3 ). This reversed effects on serum liver damage indices should result from the antioxidant effects of CCH-As or silymarin against TAA induction ( Wu et al., 2017 ; Yang et al., 2019 ). Lin et al.…”

“…Paraffin-embedded liver sections were stained for F4/80 (anti-active macrophage) (Abcam, Cambridge, United Kingdom) and α-SMA (fibrosis hallmark) with immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining procedures as previously detailed[ 14 ]. Briefly, liver sections were incubated with a specific primary antibody, followed by incubation with horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-linked secondary antibody (Dako, Glostrup, Denmark) and 3,3’-diaminobenzidine; the sections were then scanned with the NanoZoomer Digital Pathology system.…”
