Preventive action of curcumin in experimental acute pancreatitis in mouse

Abstract: Background & objectives:Curcuma longa (turmeric) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for inflammatory conditions. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the preventive effects of curcumin against acute pancreatitis (AP) induced by caerulein in mouse and to elucidate possible mechanism of curcumin action. Methods:Curcumin (50 mg/kg/day) was intraperitoneally injected to Kun Ming male mice for 6 days, followed by injection of caerulein to induce AP. GW9662 (0.3 mg/kg), a sp… Show more

“…Curcumin is a natural polyphenol derived from the plant Curcuma longa, commonly called turmeric. The curcuminoids are natural phenols and are responsible for the yellow color of turmeric [11][12][13]. Curcumin has been shown to have a wide spectrum of biological actions.…”

“…Wang et al showed that curcumin-solid lipid nanoparticles, administered by IP injection, effectively suppressed airway hyperresponsiveness, inflammatory cell infiltration and expression of IL-4 and IL-13 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in an asthma animal model [38]. The route of administration in the majority of other studies investigating similar therapeutic potentials is systemic, either by oral or IP delivery [39][40][41][42][43][44]. Our study is one of a few to investigate local administration of nanoparticles using topical application of curcumin in the genital tissue.…”

“…At 24 h after cDDP administration (5 th day), the animals were euthanized for sample collection. The dose of unmodified CMN applied in this study was defined from previously published studies in rodents ( Ganta et al ., 2010 ; Yu et al ., 2011 ) and due the absence of toxic effects at macroscopic levels; and the dose of cDDP (6 mg/kg b.w.) was selected based on other studies that have shown that this dose induces chromosomal damage in rodents ( Serpeloni et al ., 2013 ).…”
