Prevention of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting

Abstract: The first step in the prevention of PONV is assessment and reduction of risk factors. Although nonpharmacologic therapies may play a role in the treatment of PONV, the mainstay of therapy for PONV is pharmacologic modalities. Patients at moderate to high risk for PONV need prophylactic antiemetic therapy. High-risk patients may require combination therapy with 2 or 3 agents from different antiemetic classes. Rescue antiemetic therapy is needed by patients who actually develop PONV. The agents of choice in such… Show more

“…5-HT3 receptor antagonists have been used since they were first proven to be highly effective in preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting [3]. Palonosetron is the most recently developed 5-HT3 antagonist and its efficacy was first proven in the prevention of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (CINV).…”

“…Hyoscine, a drug that controls motion sickness, was found to be effective in control of PONV in middle ear surgeries. [39] Many patients of middle ear surgery are noticed to complain of dizziness and vertigo in the intra and postoperative period and this could possibly be attributed to LFS and physical stimulation. There is considerable association between occurrences of vertigo-dizziness with nausea-vomiting in these cases.…”
