Prevention of post-menopausal bone loss with 1α-hydroxy vitamin D3 a three-year prospective study

Abstract: An open and controlled prospective study was used to assess the preventive efficiency of 1 alpha-hydroxy vitamin D3 (1 alpha (OH) Vit. D3) on post-menopausal vertebral bone loss. Of the 36 patients included in the study, 25 completed two years of treatment with 1 microgram/day of 1 alpha (OH) Vit. D3 and 500 mg of calcium. The vertebral bone mineral density measured by dual photon absorptiometry did not vary in the treated group, whereas it decreased significantly in the control group at the end of the 2 years… Show more

“…For a number of treatments, effects appear to persist when treatment is stopped. The evidence of persistence of effect for several years after stopping treatment is greater for hormone replacement therapy [21,22] and the bisphosphonates [23,24] than for calcium, vitamin D or fluorides [25][26][27][28]. Against this background 10 year probabilities are appropriate and were used for this reason in our analysis.…”

“…The results of one study suggested a catch-up loss over a period of 2-3 years 200 but the results of another prospective randomised study suggested otherwise. 201 In the latter study, patients were followed for a 12-year period.…”

“…In the study's collective, no severe hypercalcemia was found; the highest measured value under treatment was 2.48 mmol/liter (upper normal value 2.42 mmollliter). This is due to the controlled amount of oral calcium intake which is reported to be 600-800 mg per day [25]. Moreover, a considerable number of our patients have reported an increase in general well-being and a decrease of pain.…”
