Prevention of non-melanoma skin cancer in organ transplant patients by regular use of a sunscreen: a 24 months, prospective, case-control study

Abstract: Regular use of sunscreens, as part of a consequent UV-protection strategy, may prevent the development of further AK and invasive SCC and, to a lesser degree, BCC in immune-compromised organ transplant recipients.

“…The preventive and therapeutic effect of the use of sunscreen on AKs had already been reported (OR=1.5 for remission and RR = 0.6 for incidence), mainly in places and times of year with high levels of UVR. [60][61][62] Our study presents some limitations as a result of a possible inaccuracy in the clinical diagnosis of AKs and also because the manual counting of lesions produces variable reproducibility. 14,63 Nevertheless, our results prove to be consistent with the data found in the literature and with the pathophysiology of the lesions.…”

“…14,15 In OTRs, regular sunscreen use for 24 months was associated with significant reductions in new SCC and AK occurrences. 16 In addition, habitual use of sunscreens and other photoprotection decreased the rate of subsequent SCCs after a first SCC in OTRs. 17 UV protection is therefore essential for both primary [10][11][12] and secondary prevention of NMSC, and this behaviour should be reinforced in healthy patients as well as in OTRs and others at elevated risk of skin cancer.…”

“…Aktinische Keratosen finden sich vorwiegend an den sonnenexponierten Hautarealen, deren Entstehung wird durch den mutagenen und immunsuppressiven Effekt des UV-Lichtes induziert. Transplantierte Patienten, die regelmässig Sonnenschutzcreme anwendeten (2 mg/cm 2 Hautfläche täglich für zwei Jahre), entwickelten gemäss einer prospektiven Studie signifikant seltener AK [15]. können [17,18].…”
