Prevention ofStreptococcus pneumoniae(pneumococcal) infections in adults

Abstract: A Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) által okozott infekciók változatlanul súlyos problémát jelentenek, a hospitalizációt igénylő felnőttkori, otthon szerzett pneumoniák mintegy 40%-át okozzák. “…There are currently two pneumococcal vaccines available including a 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) and three conjugate vaccines: 7-valent (PCV7), 10-valent (PCV10) and 13-valent (PCV13). These vaccines are recommended for high-risk groups including patients with chronic diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cochlear implants, cranial-injured patients, smokers, diabetes and immunosuppressive patients ( 9 ). The PPSV23 and PCV13 are used in children and adults of 5 to 64 years old.…”

“…Streptococcal infection generally presents in extreme ages with soft tissue infections, cardiac, renal, and splenic dysfunctions. There is estimated to be as high as 2 million deaths globally in adults each year due to streptococcal infections [ 3 , 6 8 ]. Following effective introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, incidence of invasive streptococcal diseases was reduced in children in developed as well as developing countries [ 9 – 11 ].…”
