Prevention of fungal diseases in transgenic, bialaphos- and glufosinate-resistant creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris)

Abstract: The antifungal activity of the herbicides bialaphos and glufosinate, the active moiety of bialaphos, was assessed. Bialaphos showed a higher level of in vitro antifungal activity againstRhizoctonia solani, Sclerotinia homoeocarpa, andPythium aphanidermatumthan glufosinate. Glufosinate suppressed the mycelial growth ofR. solaniandS. homoeocarpa, but it had no inhibitory effect onP. aphanidermatumup to the highest concentration in our testing regimes. Various concentrations of bialaphos solutions were applied to… Show more

“…It was also antifungal against pathogens of grapes (Vitis spp.) [44] [48]. Glufosinate significantly inhibited mycelial growth of Rhizoctonia solani (sheath blight disease) and S. homoeocarpa (dollar spot disease) infecting bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) [49] and also inhibited some beneficial plant soil fungi and bacteria [50].…”

“…Glufosinate is fungitoxic (Liu et al, 1998) and bactericidal (Pline et al, 2001) and provides some level of protection from plant diseases in glufosinateresistant crops. For example, glufosinate reduced the severity of rice blast and brown leaf spot in glufosinate-resistant rice (Ahn, 2008).…”

“…Glufosinate also reduces fungal diseases in glufosinate-resistant bentgrass (Agrostis spp.) (Liu et al, 1998;Wang et al, 2003). There may be similar benefits of glyphosate in GR crops with some plant pathogens.…”
