“…Since the major portions of the presentation of this portion of the program appears to be centered around problems of essential hypertension I will use hypertension and variability in blood pressure as my example to demonstrate our notions. The theory that degenerative heart disease can be affected by neural, environmental and behavioral factors appears to be well accepted in the Russian literature (Simonson & Brozek, 1959) and is gaining some influence in this country (Raab, 1963;Jagan et a/., 1963). In our discussion of "causative" factors of essential hypertension we will restrict ourselves only to behavioral and neurogenic components, with the full awareness that other components such as heredity, diet, exercise, etc., are equally important.…”
