Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes Mellitus In Low and Middle Income Countries

Abstract: Hyperglycemia as a component of metabolic syndrome, appears to be an important risk marker of vascular disease in most developing countries which are under transition from poverty to affluence. Despite a moderate increase in fat intake and low rates of obesity, the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and diabetes is rapidly increasing in most of the developing economies. It is a paradox that in some of these countries the increased risk of people to diabetes and CAD, especially at a younger age, is difficult… Show more

“…Clinical advancements, which have precipitated a substantial decline in vascular disease mortality rates, translate to a shift in the cause of death, moving from vascular complications to cancers as the leading contributor to diabetes-related deaths [28]. Concurrently, lifestyle modifications in these populations have been instrumental in lowering cardiovascular complications related to diabetes mortality [29]. These trends are distinctively disparate from low-and middle-income countries, where an escalation in risk factors such as diet, obesity and smoking has been observed [29].…”

“…It is useful for us to consume some sugar substances appropriately, while it can harm our body if overdosed. Nowadays, more and more people have some diseases, such as dental caries, hypertension, hyperglycemia, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity, which are more or less related to excessive intake of sugar. According to the data published in New England Journal of Medicine in 2010, 92.4 million adults suffer from diabetes in China, which has the most people suffering from diabetes in the world . To avoid the health problem caused by excessive intake of sugar substances, people turn their attention to developing nonsugar sweeteners and low-calorie sweet agents.…”
