General Strain Theory (GST) posits that different types of strain lead to different types of negative emotions, some of which increase the likelihood of maladaptive coping.Much research on GST has focused on anger and depression. Far less attention has been directed toward other negative emotions, including anxiety and envy. The current study uses cross-sectional data from surveys administered to a university-based sample (N = 500) to address these voids and explore gender differences in the effects of strain and negative emotions in maladaptive coping. Results indicate that when gender differences existed in levels of strain and negative emotions, females experienced higher levels than males. Strain significantly predicted all four measures of negative emotions examined in this study. Finally, different negative emotions were found to have differing effects on different measures of maladaptive coping. Implications of this study for theory, future research, and policy are discussed.

Separate lines of research have linked the temperament factor negative affect and perfectionism with internalizing disorders. Despite theory, no previous studies have connected these lines of research to examine internalizing pathology. The current study tested a path model to investigate the mediating effect of perfectionism domains on the relation between negative affect and child anxiety, worry, and depression symptoms. Participants were 61 parent-child dyads recruited from the community. Children were 7-13 years old (54.1 % male; 88.2 % Caucasian). Overall the model fit the data well. Analyses indicated that separate domains of perfectionism mediated separate relations between negative affect and child anxiety, worry, and depression symptoms. The findings suggest that domains of perfectionism may be implicated in specific paths between negative affect and child anxiety, depression, and worry. Implications and future directions are discussed.

RESUMENLa relación existente entre el perfeccionismo y el rechazo a la escuela es un ámbito de investigación con escasos estudios. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar la relación entre Perfeccionismo Socialmente Prescrito (PSP) y rechazo a la escuela en función de los factores II (escapar de la aversión social y/o situaciones de evaluación de la escuela) y III (búsqueda de la atención de otras personas significativas) que justifican esta conducta. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 733 estudiantes españoles entre 8 y 12 años (M= 10.03, DE= 1.25). Los instrumentos utilizados para establecer esta relación fueron la Child and Adolescent Perfecctionism Scale, para medir el perfeccionismo, y la School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised for Children, para evaluar el rechazo escolar. Los resultados revelaron que los estudiantes que presentaron altas puntuaciones en rechazo escolar, debido a la necesidad de escapar de la aversión social y/o situaciones de evaluación, presentaron puntuaciones significativamente más altas en PSP. Igualmente, los estudiantes con alto rechazo escolar basado en la bús-queda de atención de sus seres queridos, presentaron puntuaciones significativamente más altas en PSP. Así, los resultados apoyaron que existe una relación positiva entre estas dos variables. Estos resultados podrían ser considerados por docentes y psicólogos escolares o clínicos a la hora de diseñar estrategias de prevención e intervención ante casos de rechazo a la escuela.Palabras claves: perfeccionismo, rechazo escolar, Educación Primaria.
