Prevention of acute radiodermatitis by photobiomodulation: A randomized, placebo‐controlled trial in breast cancer patients (TRANSDERMIS trial)

Abstract: The results of this trial show that PBMT is an effective tool to prevent the development of grade 2 acute RD or higher in BC patients. In addition, it also reduces the patients' symptoms related to RD. Lasers Surg. Med. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

“…In dermatology, applications of PBM span a very wide range of conditions including wound healing, hair regrowth, treatment of psoriasis and others [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. While the commercialization of devices based on PBM has been progressing at a very fast pace over the past years, the field still lacks significant consensus about fundamental mechanisms of PBM, including the molecular targets of light and the optimal selection of optical treatment parameters [2,3].…”

“…29 Over the last 20 years, PBMT has become a new treatment modality within supportive cancer care (e.g., oral mucositis and radiodermatitis). [29][30][31][32][33][34][35] The principal chromophores for PBMT are located inside the mitochondria. As a result, cells with a large number of mitochondria, such as muscle cells and neurons, are particularly sensitive to this therapy.…”
