Purpose
This study aimed to identify and validate the information content and functional capabilities of a smartphone-based application for the self-care of patients with urinary tract stones.
Methods and materials
First, by reviewing studies and urology-oriented books, studying 214 medical records, and consulting with specialists, the information items and basic capabilities of the application were identified, and in the next stage, a researcher-made questionnaire was designed based on the information obtained from the previous step. Then, experts' opinions were considered to confirm the validity and reliability of the questionnaire; the designed questionnaire was distributed among various participants. Finally, the application's leading information elements, contents, and functional capabilities were explored by analyzing the questionnaire results.
Results
To conduct the survey, 101 patients with Urinary Stone Diseases (USD), 32 urologists and nephrologists, 11 nurses, and six other specialists were recruited. After analyzing the results of the filled questionnaire, 21 information elements and nine surveyed capabilities that were more important than others were selected to be used in designing the application. Some of the principal information elements that were used in the application design include: the cause of various stones in the body, clinical manifestations, laboratory results, treatments of various stones, the role of environmental factors in the treatment, the role of nutrition in the treatment and formation of stones, and different diagnostic methods. Some of the important features of the application include: medication and fluid intake reminders, laboratory test reminders, radiography and periodic examination reminders, surgical history, and easy access to medical centers for information. The mean score of information elements was 75.07 from the patients' perspective, 65.09 from the physicians' perspective, and 80.09 from the nurses' perspective. Also, the mean score of application capabilities was 31.89 from the patients' perspective, 30.37 from the physicians' perspective, and 35.09 from the nurses' perspective. The difference in the mean scores of the above variables was statistically significant (p < 0.05) in both layers.
Conclusion
In this study, informational and functional needs and capabilities were presented for designing a mobile-based application that helps in disease management in patients with urinary tract stones.

Introduction: Mobile health applications (MHAs) represent an interesting issue to assist and improve the quality of life of patients affected by Kidney Stone Disease (KSD). Despite this, their scientific quality and adherence to guidelines are not yet addressed.Material and methods: On 2 November 2022, we conducted an observational cross-sectional descriptive study of all MHAs on KSD. A search in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store was performed. We reviewed all mobile apps from Apple App Store and Google Play Store for KSD and evaluated their usage in screening, prevention, management, and adherence to EAU guidelines.Results: In total 13 MHA were included in the final analysis. All MHAs, 4 (30.8%) from the Apple App Store and 9 (69.2%) from the Google Play Store are geared towards the patient. Engagement ranged from 1.73 to 4.06; Functionality ranged from 3.17 to 4.75; Aesthetics ranged from 1.9 to 4.12; Information ranged from 2.25 to 4.27, and Subjective quality ranged from 1.58 to 3.23. MHAs reported low and medium adherence to EAU guidelines.Conclusions: MHAs provide a very useful assistance in several medical fields, including KSD. Despite MHAs development is constantly increasing, the scientific validation, content, and quality are not yet solved. Future research is necessary to improve the quality of the apps and promote new user designed, and high-quality apps.

Several mobile healthcare (mHealth) apps are available in various marketplaces, but there is still concern about their accuracy, data safety, and regulation. The goal of this review was to critically analyze the mobile apps created for education, diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatment of patients with kidney stone disease (KSD), as well as to assess the level of data security, the contribution of physicians in their development and adherence to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Medical Device Regulation (MDR) guidance. A comprehensive literature search was performed using PubMed (September 2022), in the Apple App Store and Google Play store using relevant keywords and inclusion criteria. Information was extracted for the name of the app, primary and additional functionalities, release and last update, number of downloads, number of marks and average rating, Android/iOS compatibility, initial and in-app payments, data safety statement, physician involvement statement, and FDA/MDR guidance. A total of 986 apps and 222 articles were reviewed, of which based on the inclusion, 83 apps were finally analyzed. The apps were allocated to six categories about their primary purpose: education ( n = 8), fluid trackers ( n = 54), food content description and calculators ( n = 11), diagnosis ( n = 3), pre- and intra-operative application ( n = 4), and stent trackers ( n = 2). Of these apps, the number of apps supported for Android, iOS, and both of them were 36, 23, and 23, respectively. Despite a wide range of apps available for KSD, the participation of doctors in their development, data security, and functionality remains insufficient. Further development of mHealth should be carried out properly under the supervision of urological associations involving patient support groups, and these apps must be regularly updated for their content and data security.
