Preventing two types of well clogging

Abstract: Wells abstracting groundwater are often susceptible to screen slot (chemical) clogging and well bore (mechanical) clogging. Well clogging can cause a decrease of a well—s specific capacity over time and may threaten its reliability. Both types of clogging can be easily diagnosed during operation with the help of entrance resistance—the difference in head between the abstraction well and the observation well in its gravel pack. An increase in entrance resistance over time indicates screen slot clogging. The inc… Show more

“…When groundwater is abstracted from unconsolidated sedimentary aquifers, two types of well clogging can be distinguished (van Beek 1984; Houben and Treskatis 2007; van Beek et al 2009a): screen slot or chemical clogging and wellbore or mechanical clogging. Screen slot clogging occurs if a single well abstracts both oxygen‐containing water and iron‐containing water.…”

“…Upon mixing, iron hydroxide precipitates are formed, resulting in well clogging. This process has been described in greater detail elsewhere (van Beek et al 2009a). In the Netherlands this type of clogging is limited to (oxic) freatic aquifers.…”

“…Several elements are indicators of active clogging processes within GSHP systems. These processes can have a physical [14,15], microbiological [10,16,17] or chemical [18][19][20] source. However, in most cases clogging appears by a combination of more than one of those sources [21,22].…”

“…The dynamic operation of a system has also an impact on water quality. For instance, at system startup, the particle load increases in the well [15] while stagnant conditions occurring during downtime phases promote oxygenation, that in turn favors microbial abundance and diversity in the well [26].…”
