“…These include measures aiming to promote purposeful activity and meaningful social support, as well as those to reduce victimisation in prison (Favril, 2021;Marzano et al, 2016). In view of the wide range of factors associated with risk of suicide in prisons, a multilevel approach that addresses both clinical vulnerabilities and prison-specific stressors is likely to have the largest potential to prevent suicidal behaviour (Barker et al, 2014;Stijelja & Mishara, 2022). Prevention efforts should be integrated and joined-up, as no singular approach will likely be able to impact on a complex behaviour as (attempted) suicide.…”

“…Policy standards are largely post hoc constructions derived from the cumulative experience of experts, commonly noted causes of litigation in cases of correctional suicide, and lessons learned from judicial intervention. Some evidence that correctional SPPs can be effective exists, especially when they contain multiple components (Stijelja & Mishara, 2022), and this roughly mirrors community findings (Hofstra et al, 2020). However, which components or combination of components contribute to effectiveness is not known.…”

“…The standards describe recommended components of the SPP, such as training staff in suicide prevention, screening for suicide risk, and responding to suicide attempts. Standards have been promulgated since the 1980s (Hayes, 1995), and meta-analytic evidence suggests that correctional SPPs are effective (Stijelja & Mishara, 2022). That said, the most recent policy surveys of correctional SPPs, now dated, showed that while the majority of facilities in the United States had suicide prevention policies, exceedingly few contained all recommended components (Hayes, 2012, 1995).…”

“…No obstante, se han diseñado escasas investigaciones que analicen la conducta suicida con perspectiva de género, y la mayoría de estudios acerca de la prevención del riesgo suicida en prisión no han tenido en cuenta aspectos diferenciales atendiendo al sexo 20 .…”
