Preventing Cancer

Abstract: Advancements in management protocols and chemotherapeutics have improved outcomes for patients diagnosed with cancer. Cancer, however, continues to claim many lives annually in the United States and around the world. There is a large body of evidence that is strong and consistent that through modification of diet and lifestyle habits, cancer can be a preventable disease. This article discusses these changes and highlights the evidence for and against implementing them.

“…Epidemiological studies have highlighted environmental factors as having a major role in the etiology of breast cancer. Genetic factors are obviously involved in carcinogenesis, but diet, as an environmental factor, is likely to have an influence on health [ 1 ], and particularly on tumor emergence [ 2 – 4 ]. For 40 years, differences in breast cancer incidence among women over the world and the influence of migrations on this incidence suggested that environmental factors such as dietary fat may play a role in this disease [ 5 , 6 ].…”

“…Genetic factors are obviously involved in carcinogenesis, but diet is an environmental factor that is likely to have an influence on health (1), and particularly on tumor emergence (2)(3)(4). It has been shown that n-3 polyunsaturated, long-chain fatty acids (PUFAs), such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are able to play an important preventive role in cardiovascular disease (5) and cancer (6).…”

“…CM dietary herbs (supplements) or Chinese herbal medicine may play a crucial role in preventing the incidence, recurrence, and metastasis of breast cancer. Many experimental studies have demonstrated that some foods representative of the CM classifications could reduce the risk of cancer [3032], and that there is a relationship between the use of CM herbs or related Chinese herbal medicine and the reduced incidence of breast cancer [33]. …”
