Background: Blood-borne viral infection is a public health problem, especially in high-risk patients, including those with renal failure. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: In this study, 94 patients were recruited and examined for HBV surface antigen (HBsAg), HCV antibodies (HCVAb), and HIV using ELISA assay. HCV positivity was confirmed via real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The patients were followed-up by testing their blood samples for HBsAg, HCVAb, and HIV on a monthly basis. Results: At the beginning of the study, 3 out of 94 (3.2%) patients were HBsAg positive. In addition, 4 out of 94 (4.3%) patients were HCVAb positive; HCV-positive patients were confirmed via RT-PCR. In addition, three new samples (2 males and 1 female) became HCVAb positive during the follow up. New cases of infection might be associated with exposure to inadequately sterilized dialysis. All the recruited patients were negative for HIV throughout the study. Conclusions:The prevalence of HBsAg and HCV positivity in subjects undergoing hemodialysis was comparable to most neighboring countries. Strict infection control measures should be taken to prevent infection transmission.

Background: Infection with HBV is a major public health problem. Determining the risk factors of such an infection is of great importance for a preventive public health plan. Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the clinical presentations of patients with HBV, to assess the knowledge of patients about the mode of transmission of the infection, and to estimate the prevalence of risk factors associated with HBV infection. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed among patients with HBV attending hepatitis unit in Azadi teaching hospital, Duhok city, Iraq. A total of 423 patients were recruited in the study over the period of January 2013 to December 2015. Data collection was performed by a face-to-face interview using a questionnaire sheet for the collection of personal information, data regarding the knowledge about mode of transmission of HBV, and data about risky behaviors. Results and Conclusions: 287/423 (68%) of the recruited subjects were males, 141/423 (33%) were from the central area in Duhok, and 216/423 (51%) were married. Additionally, 375/423 (88.7%) of the patients were asymptomatic. 383/423 (90.5%) of the recruited subjects claimed that they do not know the risk factors of HBV transmission. 85/423 (20.1%) of the recruited subjects gave a history of previous surgical operation and 73/423 (17.2%) of the patients gave a history of dental surgery. Conclusions: Our study has given an insight into the most common risk factors associated with HBV infection. Furthermore, it has shown a lack in knowledge regarding HBV. A comprehensive population based program is needed to combat the spread of infection and early detection of HBV infection especially in rural and remote areas.

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a public health problem in Iraq. Healthcare providers have set a plan to eradicate the virus by 2030. Objectives: The current study aimed at evaluating the public knowledge in Duhok city, Iraq, about HBV. Methods: A total of 168 subjects were recruited and the data were collected via a self-reporting questionnaire. The subjects were asked about the modes of transmission, symptomatology of HBV, and vaccination. Results: Totally, 168 persons were recruited in the current study and they were asked 11 questions. In total, 58.6% of the questions were answered correctly; 75% of the participants knew that HBV is transmitted more easily than HIV; 35.2% of the females thought that HIV is transmitted more easily than HBV, which was significantly higher than that of males (20.2%) (P = 0.03). The same trend was found among villagers who thought that HIV is more easily transmitted than HBV (29.5% versus 22.4% for urban residents; P = 0.02). It was also found that only 33.9% of the subjects knew that HBV can be transmitted by toothbrush. In addition, the majority of illiterate participants (75.9%) thought that HBV can be transmitted by food (P = 0.05). Conclusions:The current study results showed the average levels of knowledge about HBV among participants. More studies are needed to evaluate the level of knowledge after implementing educational programs.
