“…The seroprevalence rates for HBV and HCV infections (0.4% and 0.1%, respectively) confirm the low prevalence of viral hepatitis in the general population of the NE region (lower than 2%). 33 Both prevalence rates are similar to the results found in other Brazilian cities. 10 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 18 , 20 , 34 , 35 This prevalence is in line with the prevalence of HBsAg among children under five years old, in Latin America and the Caribbean, except in Honduras, Panama, Ecuador, and Paraguay (1–1.5%) and Jamaica, Haiti, and Guyana (2.5%), where the prevalence is higher.…”

“…It should also be emphasized that, contrary to studies performed in the 1990s, the prevalence in more recent studies was less than 7%. Table 5 presents the results of 25 surveys carried out in pregnant and postpartum women that reported low prevalence, with 16 (64%) of 25 reports showing that HBsAg was present in less than 1.0% of women (91) (92) (93) (94) (95) (96) (97) (98) (99) (100) (101) (102) (103) (104) (105) (106) (107) (108) (109) (110) . Three studies reported intermediate or high endemicity.…”

“…It is important to highlight that the studies used to compare our findings belonged to similar referrence centers. Early diagnosis, combined with knowledge of the physical and social characteristics of the affected population, such as their lifestyle, age, gender, profession, among others, has been highly effective in preventing new cases through educational measures for the specific population, thus preventing the development of severe cases that evolve to malignancy and death (Miranda, et al, 2018;Conceição, et al, 2009;Liell, et al, 2009). Many aspects regarding the pathology and impact of STIs infections in public health are still poorly known, evidencing the importance of studies directed to epidemiology (World Health Organization, 2001).…”
