El síndrome de intestino irritable es una enfermedad funcional intestinal frecuente a nivel mundial, pero con pocos estudios de prevalencia. Su diagnóstico es clínico y se basa en criterios acordados internacionalmente que han cambiado con el tiempo, actualmente regidos por el Consenso de Roma IV. Objetivo: Recabar y actualizar datos disponibles de prevalencia de América Latina para entender mejor el comportamiento regional de SII. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda de trabajos originales, autodefinidos de prevalencia, en las bases de datos Pubmed y Lilacs así como presentaciones en congresos de trabajos originales. Resultados: Se encontraron 27 estudios según los criterios de búsqueda establecidos. De ellos, 16 eran en población general. Dos trabajos incluyeron el estudio de prevalencia de más de una población constituyendo finalmente 22 referencias desarrolladas en 9 países. La prevalencia promedio total para América Latina fue 15,4%. La prevalencia promedio encontrada por criterios de Roma II fue 23,5%; por Roma III 11,8% y por Roma IV 6,98%. Conclusión: Esta es la primera revisión en reunir datos de prevalencia de síndrome de intestino irritable en población general de nueve países de América Latina. La prevalenci d fue amplia y los criterios diagnósticos utilizados hicieron la mayor diferencia.

Background and Study Aims: Lactase non-persistence (LNP), or primary hypolactasia, is a genetic condition that mediates lactose malabsorption and can cause lactose intolerance. Here we report the prevalence of lactose intolerance in a double-blind placebo study. Methods: The LCT C>T_-13910 variant was genotyped by RT-PCR in 121 volunteers and lactose malabsorption was assessed using the hydrogen breath test (HBT) after consuming 25 g of lactose. Lactose intolerance was assessed by scoring symptoms (SS) using a standardized questionnaire following challenge with a lactose solution or saccharose placebo. Results: The LNP genotype was observed in 57% of the volunteers, among whom 87% were HBT(+). In the HBT(+) group the median SS was 9 and in the HBT(-) group the median SS was 3 (p < 0.001). No difference was observed in the SS when both groups were challenged with the placebo. The most common symptoms included audible bowel sounds, abdominal pain and meteorism. In the ROC curve analysis, an SS ≥6 demonstrated 72% sensitivity and 81% specificity for predicting a positive HBT. To estimate prevalence, lactose intolerance was defined as the presence of an SS ≥6 points after subtracting the placebo effect and 34% of the study population met this definition. Conclusions: The LNP genotype was present in more than half of subjects evaluated and the observed prevalence of lactose intolerance was 34%.

Introduction: Irritable bowel syndrome is a worldwide functional gastrointestinal illness, but its main cause is not definite. The primary cause of gastritis, peptic ulcers, and stomach cancer is Helicobacter pylori. The exact relation between H. pylori infection and IBS incidence is still indefinite. Aim of the work: To assess any potential link between Helicobacter pylori infection and the incidence of irritable bowel syndrome. Patients and method: In our study, we recruited 95 patients. They were divided into Group (1) including those who fulfilled the IBS diagnosis (in compliance with Rome IV criteria) named as a case group and a healthy control group with no IBS diagnosis as Group (2). Every patient enrolled in the study completed a Questionnaire, complete physical examination, H. pylori stool antigen, and stool examination. Results: IBS patients were significantly (P value= 0.001) younger than the control group (32.35± 13.003 vs 41.60± 12.535). Most IBS patients were females (60%) but with no significant difference over males. H. pylori-positive patients were significantly (P value= 0.001) older than the control group (40.47± 12.572 vs 30 ± 13.149). However, there was no discernible gender or stress difference between the two groups. Age (P=0.000) and stress (P=0.000) were discovered through multivariate analysis to be independent predictors of IBS, although H. Pylori infection was not. In conclusion, there was no connection between H. pylori infection and IBS.
