Prevalencia de infeccion a Trypanosoma cruzi en donadores de sangre en el Estado de Jalisco, Mexico

Abstract: A Chagas disease serological study was done from October 1991 to March 1992 and 3419 samples were taken from people who donated blood at 12 county areas of Jalisco, México and 8 urban hospitals, by means of indirect hemagglutination reaction. The results indicate that: 73.5% of the donors were from urban area, 26.5% were from rural areas; 1.28% of the donors (N = 44) were considered infected. “…This data indicate that areas considered of low prevalence for T. cruzi infection as the central part of Mexico including Mexico City may represent a serious potentially risk in blood banking practice. In this sense our data support previously reported findings (Goldsmith & Kagan 1978, Monteón et al 1987, Trujillo-Contreras et al 1993, Rodríguez-Felix et al 1995, Rangel et al 1998, Guzmán-Bracho et al 1998, Sanchéz-Guillen et al 2002.…”

“…3,13 Moreover, antibodies to T. cruzi have been reported in sera from blood donors in proportions higher than those found in the serologic survey mentioned earlier. [14][15][16] Very recently, a seropositivity of 17% was found in a blood bank in the same area of this study. 17 More important, an increasing number of clinical cases have been reported in some parts of Mexico not previously considered as chagasic areas, such as the states of Jalisco and Puebla.…”

“…More recently, however, it has been estimated that there are as many as two million infected individuals and more than 72 000 cases in Mexico and Central America [2]. Even though these figures are only estimates, other field studies support the notion that the prevalence of T. cruzi infection might be higher in some regions of the country than previously thought [35]. T. cruzi has also been repeatedly found infecting insects and mammals in Mexico and the United States of America [68].…”
