This study aimed to determine the frequency of infection by intestinal protozoa diagnosed in patients from a clinical analysis laboratory in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil. This was a retrospective descriptive study, using a database of stool examination results from July to December 2015. The study population consisted of males and females of all ages, from the greater area of Alagoas. Data on epidemiological variables such as age and gender were obtained using a collection instrument. Protozoan species were identified from stool examinations. Results on the prevalence of intestinal parasites are described as simple and relative frequencies. We examined a total of 1277 stool samples, of which 12.69% were positive for one or more protozoa. 43.83% were from men and 56.17% were from women. Endolimax nana was the most prevalent (59.22%) protozoan species followed by Entamoeba coli (23.45%). Although non-pathogenic, they indicate fecal contamination of drinking water. The highest number (23.46%) of infected individuals was observed among children in the 0 to 11 years age group. A high prevalence (93.83%) of monoparasitism was noted. We concluded that there was a high frequency of infection and a high prevalence of E. nana. Infections were more common in women than in men. Our results emphasize the need for preventive measures to control intestinal parasitic infections.

RESUMOAs enteroparasitoses são infecções originadas por protozoários e helmintos que acometem o trato digestivo dos seres vivos, e estão associadas a fatores como ausência ou déficit de condições sócio-econômicas, ingestão de água contaminada e estado nutricional precário. Apesar de a infecção atingir as mais variadas idades, as crianças constituem um grupo de alto risco quando se trata de parasitos intestinais principalmente por ainda não apresentarem noções de higiene formada e sistema imunológico em desenvolvimento. O objetivo desse projeto baseia-se na descrição do perfil epidemiológico de parasitoses intestinais de crianças em creches no município de Maceió -AL. A amostra esperada da pesquisa era de aproximadamente 50 crianças. No entanto, devido a entraves, obtivemos 27 amostras, em um intervalo de idade entre 1 a 11 anos, sendo encontrado positividade para enteroparasitose 14 (51,85%) crianças. Dessa forma, a baixa adesão e a falta de conhecimento prévio dos responsáveis em relação ao exame parasitológico de fezes são fatores que impedem a detecção rápida desses microrganismos, o que faz com que a infecção se perpetue por um longo período, desencadeando a proliferação e o aparecimento dos sintomas.

The population’s living conditions, basic sanitation, hygiene, and poor socioeconomic status, are determining factors for diseases´ transmission, such as intestinal parasitic infections which constitute one of the main public health problems in Brazil. These diseases are considered endemic in several areas of the country, presenting a wide geographic distribution, varying according to environmental conditions and parasites´ species. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of intestinal parasites in individuals attending a clinical analysis laboratory in a municipality located in Southern of Brazil. A retrospective study was carried out through the analysis of 2,247 reports of parasitological stool examination from individuals who attended a clinical analysis laboratory located in Veranópolis, Rio Grande do Sul, from September 1st, 2018, to December 31st, 2020. Parasitic structures were found in stool samples from 181 (8.1%) individuals. The protozoans Endolimax nana and Entamoeba coli were the most prevalent parasites, being present in 58.0% and 29.8% of individuals, respectively. A higher prevalence of intestinal parasites was observed in women (52.5%), aged 21 to 60 years old (62.4%). Biparasitism or polyparasitism was present in 7.2% (13/181) of individuals and only 31.7% (713/2247) of samples collected three fecal samples for examination. The low prevalence of intestinal parasites found in the present study may be an indicator of improvements in sanitary, environmental, and health education conditions.
