Abstract: To evaluate the prevalence of varicella-zoster virus infection in young adults from different Brazilian urban regions, 975 serum samples from blood donors aged 20 to 29 years, from tropical climate cities (Salvador and Fortaleza) and from temperate climate cities (S o Paulo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre) were tested by an in-house ELISA for detection of anti-varicella-zoster virus IgG antibodies. The overall prevalence was 94.2%. The lowest rate was observed in Fortaleza (88.7%) and the highest in Curitiba (99.5%… Show more

“…There is no clear definition in the literature establishing an anti-VZV antibody titer value (as measured by ELISA) that would be considered protective (13,17). In a recently published article, Li et al demonstrated a correlation between antibody titers and protection using the gpELISA, which detects anti-VZV glycoprotein antibodies.…”

“…The anti-VZV antibodies were detected by immunosorbent assay, using an in-house assay developed by Reis et al (13). An anti-VZV antibody titer greater than 100 mAU/mL was considered positive by the standardized method (13). We decided to vaccinate those patients presenting anti-VZV antibody titers lower than 500 mAU/mL.…”
