Prevalence, risk factors, challenges, and the currently available diagnostic tools for the determination of helminths infections in human

Abstract: Soil transmitted helminthes (STH) are among the major public health issues in tropical and sub-tropical countries infecting more than 2 billion humans worldwide. STH causes considerable morbidity in children, affecting their cognitive development and physical growth. Endemic areas with poor sanitation and limited access to good quality water supply have the highest burden of STH infection. Various approaches to reduce and control the worm infections include the intermittent deworming of children with anti-helm… Show more

“…Improvements in sanitation standards always have an impact on infection and reinfection rates. Children who are infected with worms will affect the process of growth and development [32]. These children have serious problems such as malnutrition, slow growth and development compared to other children of their age, iron anemia, delays in the development of the motor system.…”

“…Parasites in stool samples were detected after microscopic examination using Kato-Katz (KK) method [17] and the Formalin-Ether Concentration (FEC) technique [18]. A slide was "positive" or "negative" based on the crosschecking examination of 41.7 mg of fresh material per sample mounted with distilled water for KK thick smears and with lugol's iodine for FEC thick smears.…”

“…Helminth infections in humans can be chronic but seldom lethal and can last for decades. However, they can cause various symptoms ranging from abdominal pain, diarrhoea, malaise and anaemia to malnutrition and impaired physical and cognitive development, particularly in children ( King, 2010 ; Riaz et al, 2020 ; WHO, 2020 ). Parasitic infections in production animals cause significant direct and indirect economic losses.…”
