Prevalence, risk factors, and genotype distribution of hepatitis C virus infection in the general population: A community-based survey in southern Italy

Abstract: In 1996 the prevalence, risk factors, and genotype distribu-subject (0.7%), type 2c in 66 subjects (44.6%), type 3a in 4 subjects (2.7%), and type 4 in two subjects (1.3%). These tion of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection were assessed in the general population of a town in southern Italy. The sample figures differ from those of Italian patients with chronic liver disease in whom genotype 2 is more rare. None of the individwas selected from the census by a systematic 1:4 sampling procedure. The participation ra… Show more

“…Among 1352 subjects enrolled, 195 (14.4%) tested reactive to antibody to HCV with enzyme immunoassay (EIA3). 7 These results are very similar to those reported in our control group in which geographic characteristics and risk factors for HCV infection were identical to those reported in the general population from the same geographical area. Moreover, in our study, the prevalence of risk factors for HCV infection was slightly higher in the lymphoma group.…”

“…Unconditional multiple logistic regression equations included terms for age, gender and birthplace. Birthplace was included because a higher prevalence of HCV infection has been reported in southem Italy (Guadagnino et al, 1997) than in northem Italy (Bellentani et al, 1994). Table 1 shows a few significant differences in the distribution of the three groups of cases and the control group according to certain characteristics.…”

“…In our experience the majority (nearly half of cases) of untreated patients were older that 65 years of age, with 75% over 70 years and thus likely not suitable for treatment. This is a serious treatment barrier to overcome even at a national level, because it reflects the epidemiological pattern of HCV infection common in all Italian areas as shown by several population-based surveys [10][11][12][13]. However, it should be considered that we are treating the patient and not the virus, in order to prevent HCV-related morbidity and mortality.…”
