Prevalence of Vertical Condilar Asymmetry of the Temporomandibular Joint in Patients with Signs and Symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorders

Abstract: SUMMARY:Vertical condylar asymmetry (VCA) is considered a risk factor for the development of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). VCA is determined by comparing the vertical condylar height between the left and right condyle. Several techniques have been developed to evaluate this asymmetry, and the most common among them are developed by Kjellberg et al. (1994) and Habets et al. (1988). The objective of this study was to evaluate the similarity of the Habets' and Kjellberg's methods with regard to these result… Show more

“…This is accordance with many studies [14,36,[41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48]. The best explanation for that pain-free days than women suffering hormonal fl uctuations related to their naturally occurring menstrual cycles; nevertheless, the differences were not statistically signifi cant and a predominant temporal pattern could not be discerned in this small sample [49].…”

“…This study used Kjellberg’s technique because it is easier to identify the condylar height using this technique than Habet’s method. Habet’s method is more complicated when making reference points of the most lateral point of the condyle due to variation in the condylar anatomy 16, 17, 31 .…”
