“…3 A number of studies have investigated the factors that influence yearling purchase price. 4,5,7,11,12 An economically rational investor would be prepared to pay no more for a yearling than the net present value of the expected life-time earnings of the horse plus the net present value of the residual value of the horse once its racing career has finished. 5,8,9,12 Yearling-specific variables such as age or month foaled, radiographi-cally identified first phalanx fragments, history of arthroscopy, sire's stud fee, racing performance of the dam and racing performance of siblings have been consistently shown to affect the value of a yearling at sale.…”

“…Studies evaluating the prevalence of OC dissecans (OCD) in Thoroughbred yearlings in central Kentucky have shown a prevalence of 5.1% for LTR OCD 5 and 10.9% for stifle OCD. 6 Furthermore, sale price has been found to be lower for horses with stifle OCD than other sale horses, although not to a level of significance ( p = 0.06). 6…”

“…Over 53% of racehorses experience lameness during their racing careers, of which joint injury is one of the major causes. As many as 27% of Thoroughbred yearlings go through public auction with pre‐existing arthritis , and this problem is not limited to Thoroughbreds, as a comparable 33% prevalence is seen in nonracing breeds . Targeted joint therapy for these conditions using MP acetate has been a mainstay of equine veterinary care since the early 1960s.…”
