Objective: Urinary schistosomiasis is a major public health issue in Sudan. The disease is endemic in many rural communities across the country. This is a cross-sectional study conducted to determine the prevalence and intensity of urinary schistosomiasis among selected induvial in the city of Tulus, South Darfur state, Sudan. One hundred terminal urine samples were collected and examined for Schistosoma haematobium eggs using standard filtration technique.Results: A total of 100 individual were enrolled in the study with a mean (± SD) age of 17.7 ± 0.73 years. Out of them, 62 (62%) were found to be infected with Schistosoma haematobium. The statistical analysis showed significant association with gender (P = 0.043) with higher prevalence 70.9% (39/55) in female than males 51.1% (23/45). Majority of the S. haematobium infections were classified as intense infection (82%, 51/62) with egg count ≥ 50 eggs/10 ml urine, while gross haematuria was observed in 10% of urine samples. Further studies, including large sample size will be essential to assess the burden of the disease in the study area.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected infectious disease that is endemic in resource-constrained settings. Nigeria has the highest cases of schistosomiasis in sub-Sahara Africa with about 29 million infected. This study was carried out with the aim to identify some risk factors of schistosomiasis and as well assess the efficacy of some urine physical parameters for a rapid screening procedure. Terminal urine samples were collected, analyzed with reagent strips and centrifuged at 400 revolution per minute for 4 minutes. Microscope (x10 objective) was used to examine and count the eggs. Raw data were imported into Epi Info software (version 7.1.2.0) from Microsoft Excel 2010 for analyses. About 357 respondents with a mean age of 9.39±2.06 years were sampled. Overall prevalence and intensity were 10.36% (7.61-13.96) and 322.2 eggs/10ml of urine samples respectively. Males had a higher prevalence [15.42% (10.86-20.97)] and mean intensity [77.5 eggs/10ml] and were 6 times more likely to be infected [COR (95% CI): 6.31 (2.17-25.09)]. Age group 11-15 years recorded higher prevalence (19.39% [12.10-28.61]) and intensity (110.9 eggs/10ml) and was 3 times [COR (95% CI): 3.21 (1.51-6.84)] more likely to be infected. Urine samples with faint yellow colour recorded the highest prevalence of 13.67% (8.43-20.52) and were 4 times [COR (95% CI): 4.33 (1.12-28.39)] more liable to infestation compared to the colourless samples. Age and gender are risk factors with faint yellow colour as the only reliable rapid diagnostic index. Provision of potable water and treatment with Praziquantel should be done urgently.

Epidemiological study was conducted to determine the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis and intestinal helminth co-infection among primary school pupils in Wamakko Local Government, Sokoto State, Nigeria. Urine and stool samples were collected from 400 pupils and analyzed using filtration and formol-ether concentration techniques respectively. Out of 400 samples, 63(32.8%) were co-infected with Schistosoma haematobium and one or more intestinal helminths. The co-infection of S. haematobium with Ascaris lumbricoides was most prevalent (74.6%), while S. haematobium with A. lumbricoides, hookworm, and S. haematobium with A. lumbricoides and S. mansoni had the least prevalence (1.6% each). Being male, 10-12 years of age and not washing hands before and after meals were the major risk factors for the spread of urinary schistosomiasis and intestinal helminths co-infection in the study area. An integrated strategy that involves the provision of health education to the communities, regular treatments, provision of safe water supply and sanitation facilities is highly recommended.
