Porém, na prática clínica, parece ser negligenciada e não existem estudos no Norte de Minas Gerais. Objetivou-se identificar a prevalência da incontinência urinária e os fatores associados para cada sexo entre idosos não institucionalizados. Métodos: Pesquisa transversal, de base populacional, conduzida em Montes Claros, em Minas Gerais. As informações foram analisadas no programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, versão 17.0, sendo, inicialmente, realizada análise descritiva e, posteriormente, análises bivariadas e análise múltipla por meio da regressão logística. Resultados: Verificou-se prevalência de 23,2% entre os homens idosos e de 31,1% entre as mulheres idosas. Estiveram associados à incontinência urinária nos idosos os fatores: andar com auxílio, relato de queda no último ano e fragilidade. Entre as mulheres idosas, os fatores associados foram: autopercepção negativa da saúde, artrite/artrose/reumatismo e fragilidade. Conclusão: Houve alta prevalência de incontinência urinária em idosos de ambos os sexos. Fatores relativos às condições de saúde estiveram associados à ocorrência em cada sexo, evidenciando a necessidade de uma assistência eficaz que reconheça tais especificidades. However, in clinical practice it seems to be neglected and there are no studies in the North of Minas Gerais. The aim was to identify the prevalence of urinary incontinence and associated factors for each sex among non-institutionalized elderly. ▄ INTRODUÇÃOA incontinência urinária (IU) é definida como qualquer perda involuntária de urina que pode ocorrer associada ou não a esforços 1 . Entre os fatores ligados ao seu aparecimento, muitos não se relacionam diretamente ao trato geniturinário, mas aos efeitos cumulativos de prejuízos em vários órgãos e sistemas 2,3 . O registro de cirurgias ou deformidades pélvicas, multiparidade e hipoestrogenismo interferem negativamente na função esfincteriana da bexiga e tornam a condição mais frequente em mulheres idosas 3 . A IU é considerada uma das mais importantes síndromes geriátricas, também acomete os homens idosos e se apresenta como uma condição multifatorial [1][2][3] . Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and possible risk factors of urinary incontinence (UI) among women aged 18 or older living in the city of Izmir, located in the Aegean coast of Turkey. Methods: A questionnaire and the validated International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF) were filled by urologists (O.D., V.S., A.E., O.B., and B.I.) with face-to-face interview. The participants with urge UI (UUI) and stress UI (SUI) were compared in terms of risk factors, quality of life (QoL) scores, severity of incontinence, status of doctor consultation, and total ICIQ-SF scores. Results: A total of 719 women were included and the prevalence of UI was 50.3% in our study. The key risk factors for UUI were hypertension and diabetes mellitus; the key risk factors for SUI were hypertension, multiparity, body mass index, and lower education level. Average QoL (ICIQ-SF 5) score for UUI was worse than SUI (3.8 ± 2.5 vs. 3.3 ± 2.4; p = 0.042) and seeking treatment for UI was significantly higher in participants with UUI when compared to those with SUI (45.1 vs. 24%; p ≤ 0.001). Conclusions: Physicians should be aware that risk factors may differ according to specific UI subtypes when evaluating patients with UI.

Abstract: The prevalence of UI was high. Mixed incontinence was the most frequent type of UI. Many associated factors can be prevented or improved. Thus, health policies targeted at these combined factors could reduce their prevalence rate and possibly decrease the prevalence of UI.
