Prevalence of unculturable bacteria in the periapical abscess: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective To assess the prevalence of unculturable bacteria in periapical abscess, radicular cyst, and periapical granuloma. Methods PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Ovid databases were systematically searched from January 1990 to May 2020. All the included studies were cross-sectional design. The risk of bias was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute check-list. Heterogeneity was described using meta-regression and mixed-effects model for lesion, country, and sequence technique moderators. Funnel plot a… Show more

“…Thus, among 48 species of oral spirochaetes, only three are cultured. This gave the reason to assume the involvement of cultured bacteria in the development of odontogenic inflammatory processes, their progression, and the failure of treatment according to standard protocols [31].…”

“…The spread of infection through the apical foramen triggers an inflammatory reaction that attracts a host of chemical mediators, initiating the periapical pathology. This cascade of events can ultimately lead to the formation of a periapical abscess, radicular cyst, or periapical granuloma [ 1 , 2 ]. Negative pressure pulmonary edema (NPPE), also known as post-obstructive pulmonary edema, is a rare and life-threatening condition that follows the vigorous relief of upper airway obstruction during extubation in a spontaneously breathing patient after general anesthesia or negative thoracic pressure induced by inspiratory effort against an obstructed glottis [ 3 , 4 ].…”
