Prevalence of Transfusion Transmitted Virus Infection and its Effect on Renal Graft Survival in Renal Transplant Recipients

Abstract: In RTxs, TTV infection was more prevalent than in the normal population. In our patients the virus did not have an important effect on renal graft rejection and did not cause liver injury. However, the question of whether TTV infection may affect graft survival requires further long-term investigation in larger groups.

“…A possible contribution of TTV to the immune impairment of patients with AIDS or other immunocompromising conditions has also been suggested 60, 98–103. In addition, the observation that anelloviruses often circulate in blood in the form of immune complexes and replicate in proliferating lymphoid cells has led to investigate a possible involvement of TTV and TTMV in certain kidney and hematological illnesses 41, 45, 73, 82, 104–108.…”

“…In multicenter tests performed in the United States in 3078 organ donors, anti‐HCV antibodies were discovered in 4.2% of subjects using the ELISA second‐generation test, while HCV RNA was found in 2.4% of subjects using the PCR method 78 . The occurrence of anti‐HCV antibodies within this group depends on the geographic region, method of kidney‐substitutive treatment, hemodialysis duration, number of blood transfusions, and number of transplantations 79,80 . It is estimated that about 10% to 41% of patients have anti‐HCV antibodies after renal transplantation 79 .…”
