Prevalence of Tinea Capitis and Tinea Pedis in Barcelona Schoolchildren

Abstract: The prevalence of tinea capitis was lower that we had expected, and it was noted that there was a greater prevalence of tinea pedis among schoolchildren 13-15 years of age (64.10%), the great majority of them male. The number of cases of tinea was significantly greater in immigrants.

“…Trichophyton violaceum also has been recorded as the main agent of TC in Spain [86]. However, a cross-sectional study conducted among 1,305 children in Barcelona with the highest immigrant population showed only a small percentage of TC (0.23 %) [87]. The findings of these studies attest to an increase in anthropophilic aetiological agents of TC; however, no predominant position has yet been noted.…”

“…In the study T. violecium was the most common with 72.9% dermatophyte species isolated followed by T. mentagrophytes 6.3%, M. canis 2.1%, M. equinum 2.1%, T. interdigitale 2.1%, T. terrestre 4.2%, E. flocossum 2.1%, T. schoenleinii 6.3%, and T. concentricum 2.1%. These are anthropophilic species significantly transmitted in overcrowded human settings unlike Europe where most of the dermatophytes are of zoophilic type owing to the high incidence of pet rearing (20).…”

“…Tinea capitis (TC) is the most common fungal infection in childhood. [1][2][3][4] TC concerns infection of the scalp by dermatophytes of the genera Microsporum and Trichophyton. 1,2 The causal agent cannot be determined in all children by means of clinical features alone, and the prevalence of one or other agent varies depending on the geographical area and even on the time of study.…”
