The aim of this study was to determine the risk and symptoms for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among Saudi Arabian adults. This cross-sectional survey among healthy participants was conducted at King Abdulaziz Medical City-Riyadh (KAMC-R). The Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) was used to assess the risk of OSA, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) was used to measure excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) as a manifestation of OSA in participants. The total number of participants was 2095, mean age of the sample was 42.3 (±15.5) years and 848 (40.7%) were females. Using BQ, 31.9% of the participants were classified as high risk for OSA (33.4% among females and 31.1% among males). The risk for OSA increased with age: 19.4% among the young group (≤29 years), 35.2% among the middle-aged (30-59 years), and 41% among the elderly (≥60 years). The risk of symptomatic OSA by combining both BQ and ESS was 7.8% and increased with age (5.5% among the young group, 8.5% among the middle-aged, and 9.7% among the elderly), but there was no difference between gender (8% among females vs. 7.7% among males). This study showed that the risk for OSA is very high, is equal in both genders and it increases with age and obesity.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) represents a major public health problem. We investigated the risk of SDB and associated factors in the Turkish adult population. We collected data by an interviewer‐administered questionnaire in a nationwide representative sample of 5021 adults (2598 women, 2423 men) with a mean age of 40.7 years (SD:15.1) in 2010. High risk of SDB was defined as the positive response to at least two of the three categories in the Berlin questionnaire (BQ). High risk of SDB was found in 13.7% (men: 11.1%, women: 20.2%). High risk of SDB prevalence was not significantly different between the genders in the analysis stratified for BMI categories. Female gender, older age, lower level of education and smoking in the past were associated with high risk of SDB in the logistic regression analysis models adjusting for age and gender. After the adjustment for age, gender, smoking, BMI and educational status, high risk of SDB, and BQ Category 2 score were associated with previous hospitalization and cardiovascular diseases. Risk due to BQ Category 1 and BQ Category 2 was more than additive in the models for hypertension and heart disease for the age groups 45–65 years and 65 years and over. Higher prevalence of SDB and obesity among women in our population should be addressed in further studies. Association between high risk of SDB and cardiovascular diseases, if confirmed, indicates the public health importance of screening for SDB symptoms.

Objectives: Studies have reported a higher risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the risk of OSA in patients with chronic treatment-resistant depressive symptoms is not well documented worldwide. Hence, the current study assessed the risk of OSA and associated factors in patients with chronic treatment resistant depression (cTRD). Methods: The study recruited 140 Iranian patients with cTRD. All patients completed the Berlin questionnaire, which evaluates the risk of OSA. Additionally, demographic data and history of cardiovascular or metabolic diseases were collected. Pearson's Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and independent T-test were used to assess group differences, when appropriate. Results: The study found that 89 of 140 cTRD patients (64%) were at high risk for OSA. Group comparison between cTRD patients (high vs. low risk for OSA) demonstrated that at high risk OSA-cTRD patients had an elevated rate of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and obesity. Also, age, duration of depression, and duration of treatment were significantly higher in cTRD patients with higher risk compared to those with lower risk for OSA. Conclusions:The results suggest that a noticeable number of patients with cTRD are at high risk for OSA, which is higher than the reported magnitude in the general population. Moreover, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and obesity are associated with a higher risk for OSA. Also, age, treatment duration, and depression duration could be considered as possible comorbid factors for OSA in patients with cTRD.
