Little is known of the occurrence of surgical affections of cattle at the government veterinary hospitals of Bangladesh. This study was undertaken to determine the occurrence of surgical disorders in five Upazila Veterinary Hospitals (UVH) in greater Pabna administrative district. A total of 33,584 sick animals were investigated and the overall occurrence of surgical disorders is 12.9%. The most common surgical affection is navel ill (25.8%) followed by myiasis (13.0%), foot diseases (11.3%), arthritis (8.8%) and teat obstruction (8.4%). Navel ill, umbilical hernia, arthritis, horn affections, urolithiasis and tail gangrene are more common in male than female. Foot diseases, myiasis, upward patellar fixation and hip dislocation are more common in female than male. The research has been conducted to determine the changes in haematological and serum biochemical attributes in calves affected with navel ill. Peripheral blood was collected from affected and healthy calves, and serum was separated for biochemical evaluation. In term of haematological profile, Hb and TEC were decreased whereas PCV and TLC were elevated compared to healthy calves. Some leading enzymes such as ALT, AST, ALP, LDH, CK were elevated in affected calves than their healthy counterparts. Creatinine, BUN, LDL, HDL, cholesterol and triglyceride were also elevated remarkably. Mild alterations of electrolytes such as Na + , K + , Cland Ca +2 were also observed. The results demonstrated that navel ill may compromise vital organs which should be promptly treated once diagnosed. To prevent infection, navel area should be dipped with mild antiseptic and monitored regularly.

Background: The field veterinary hospital records serve as indispensable sources of valuable information on various farm animal diseases of the respective areas. The current retrospective study was conducted to determine the distribution of clinical diseases of farm animals presented to Atpara Upazila veterinary hospital from January 2007 to December 2010. Methods: Animal, disease and related data from the official register books were stored using the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program 2010. Descriptive statistics were performed and expressed as the percentage of disease and conditions with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Of the total 6825 clinical cases recorded from the patient register, cattle, goats and sheep were presented at 87.15%, 12.75% and 0.1%, respectively. The vast majority cases were medicinal (91%) followed by gyneco-obstetrical (6%) and surgical (2%) cases. According to etio-pathological nature, the most commonly observed disease categories were parasitic (20.35%), fever (4.67%), dermatitis (6.65%), metabolic and nutritional deficiency disorders (4.59%), anorexia (2.83%), diarrhea (2.52%), arthritis (1.47%), bloat (1.32%), pneumonia (1.29%), and FMD (1.27%). A higher proportion of female cattle and goats were presented compared to that of the males. Similarly, more adult animals were presented as clinical cases than young animals. Conclusions: Among most of the clinical cases in the study area, parasitic diseases were commonly prevalent irrespective of season and host. Appropriate strategic measures should be adopted to control such infection in the study area to minimize farm production loss.
