Prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in the general population of China

Abstract: Objective The objective of this meta-analysis is to estimate the pooled prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in the general population of Mainland China. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted via the following databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, China Journals Full-Text Databases, Chongqing VIP database for Chinese Technical Periodicals and Wan Fang Data. “…Internationally, the lifetime prevalence for suicidal ideation among MSM ranges approximately between 20% and 50% (Guadamuz et al, 2014;Parker et al, 2015;Paul et al, 2002;Sivasubramanian et al, 2011). The 2015 report of the Chinese National Key Research Project "Risk Analysis and Strategic Prevention of HIV Transmission from MSM to the General Population in China," noted that 26% of MSM in China experienced suicidal ideation (Chen et al, 2015), much higher than the 3.9% for the overall population (Cao et al, 2015). Given the high prevalence of suicidal ideation, and the vital role it plays in the continuum of suicidality (Sherr et al, 2008), exploration of the risk factors for suicidal ideation among MSM to reveal future intervention targets is imperative.…”
