Prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus carrying Panton—Valentine leukocidin genes among isolates from hospitalised patients in China

Abstract: Between January 2005 and January 2006, 25 (12.8%) of 195 Staphylococcus aureus isolates were positive for Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes in a teaching hospital in Wenzhou, China. Nineteen (11.9%) of 160 hospital-acquired isolates, and six (17.1%) of 35 community-acquired isolates, harboured lukS/F-PV. Six sequence types (ST88, ST239, ST398, ST25, ST30 and ST59) were found among 18 PVL-positive methicillin-resistant isolates with SCCmec types I, III, IIIA or IV. Only ST88 was found among seven PVL-posi… Show more

“…Apparently, some communityacquired MRSA types (e.g., ST30, ST80, ST152) are PVL positive in most cases, whereas others (e.g., ST398) are not. However, although all the MRSA ST398 isolates found in Europe to date were PVL negative, a PVL-positive MRSA ST398 strain was recently detected in China (13).…”

“…The prevalence of PVL-positive S. aureus was 2.3% in Chinese hospitals, but 12.8% in Wenzhou, China Yu et al, 2008). The prevalence of PVL-positive strains of S. aureus in Japan, Africa and the USA was 0.04, 14.7 and 48.3% (Kawaguchiya et al, 2011;Mesrati et al, 2010;Lowy et al, 2007), respectively.…”

“…It is capable of acquiring virulence genes, and its acquisition of the PantonValentine leukocidin (PVL) gene (pvl) has been demonstrated [37,61,62]. Regarding other virulence factors, staphylococcal enterotoxins occasionally have been reported in LA-MRSA CC398 in pigs [53,[63][64][65] and turkeys [33••].…”
