Prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in Chinese patients with Parkinson’s disease

Abstract: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with gastrointestinal motility abnormalities that could favor the occurrence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of SIBO in Chinese patients with PD and the potential impact of SIBO on gastrointestinal symptoms and motor function. 182 consecutive Chinese patients with PD patients and 200 sex, age, and BMI-matched subjects without PD were included. All participants underwent the glucose breath test to assess SI… Show more

“…Most studies used lactulose or glucose breath tests to detect SIBO, with sensitivities of 31–68% and 29–93%, respectively, and specificities of 44–100% and 30–86%, respectively [115]. Bloating and flatulence [112,113] have been reported to be associated with SIBO in PD in some studies, whereas constipation and tenesmus were reported in one study [114]. The relationship between PD symptoms and SIBO is heterogeneous among reports.…”

“…Future study is needed to elucidate it. Moreover, gastrointestinal infections, such as Helicobacter pylori and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in PD (31,32), have potentially relevant effects on body weight and neurogastrointestinal hormones. However, leptin, ghrelin and GLP-1 may not play a major role in altered body composition in PD (21).…”

“…A small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), a disorder with excessive bacterial growth in the small intestine, has also been reported in PD patients with a prevalence varying from 25% to 67% [5255]. SIBO has been associated with gastrointestinal symptoms and worse motor scores (UPDRS III) [54, 55] while there is inconsistency regarding its effects on motor fluctuations [52, 54, 55]. SIBO might cause changes in intestinal permeability and contribute to an increase in bacterial translocation and consequently induction of an inflammatory response in the host [56].…”
