Prevalence of sleep disturbance and the association between poor disease control in people with ankylosing spondylitis within the Australian clinical setting (ASLEEP study): a real-world observational study using the OPAL dataset

Abstract: Introduction Sleep disturbance and fatigue are commonly reported in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) but specific prevalence and the relationship to disease control are unknown. Method This retrospective non-interventional observational study of data from the OPAL dataset included patients with AS (ICD code M45, M45.0 or M08.1), aged 18 to 95 years and had completed ≥ 1 sleep questionnaire between 1 January 2019 and 30 September 2020. “…I was especially wary of the potential for obsessive patient-initiated uploads of mounds of nonrelevant details, as well as concerns about patients interrogating my reports. However, I was also aware of the potential benefits, especially pharmacy dispensing information and hospital discharge summaries, and so I started to use MHR just over 2 years ago when it became seamlessly integrated into my clinical software system, Audit4 (Software 4 Specialists), [4][5][6] allowing effortless and 'passwordless' access to patient MHR files. “…Omar, Mahmud et al (2022) showed that patients with AS have a higher risk of depression and anxiety; however, these patients had a lower risk of schizophrenia (SCZ) 8 . Simultaneously, compared with the normal population, one-fth of AS patients suffer from moderate to severe insomnia and other mental disorders 9 . Another national birth cohort study con rmed that paternal AS was associated with an increased risk of autism (ASD) in offspring 10 .…”
