Prevalence of Respiratory Allergy Among Children and Adolescents in Geneva, Switzerland

Abstract: During the 1967–1968 school year a prevalence survey of major allergic diseases could be performed among 4,781 kindergarten pupils (5 and 6 years old) and 2,451 9th grade students (15 years old) attending the Geneva public schools. “…In a recent study of 700 schoolchildren in London, the relative prevalence of atopic to other forms of eczema was over 50-fold [Williams H.C., unpubl.]. Prevalence rates of eczema in this study are very similar to other studies that have examined similar age groups [11][12][13], and the proportion of such cases who later developed concurrent asthma and hay fever are entirely compatible with our assumption that eczema in this study was primarily atopic eczema. Some misclassification of eczema cases might have occurred, e.g.…”

“…In 1968 and 1981 Varonier [13] and Varonier et al [14] con ducted the only longitudinal study, namely in 15 year olds in Geneva schools, using the same methods of data collection. Between 1968 and 1981 there was a statistically significant increase from 4.40% to 6.11% (table 1); as we know, hay fever manifests itself in 2 out of 3 patients before the age of 14 years and in 8 out of 10 before the age of 20 years ( fig.…”

“…Allergic diseases are common in childhood, and figures of 10-24% for overall allergic diseases have been reported from Europe and North America (1,2,3). Asthma, which is the disease that has been studied most extensively, is reported to occur in 2.5-9.3% of school children (2,4,5,6).…”
