Prevalence of psychiatric disorder in a methadone maintenance population

Abstract: The prevalence of psychiatric disorder is up to 10 times higher in the population on methadone maintenance than in the general population and is two to three times higher than that found in community surveys of those with a substance-use disorder. These results are consistent with earlier findings and have implications for service planning.

“…Participant characteristics are shown in Table 1. The characteristics of participants are similar to those found in drug treatment (particularly substitution treatment) populations in Australia, although we deliberately recruited equal numbers of men and women, and men are typically over-represented in drug treatment populations (Callaly et al 2001;Treloar et al 2004). All participants had sought drug treatment after problems with illicit opiate or stimulant drugs, particularly heroin and amphetamines.…”

“…Although problems with illicit drug dependence can be protracted and drug treatment clients commonly report high levels of comorbid physical and mental health conditions (Anglin and Hser 1990;Callaly et al 2001;Hser et al 1997;Teesson et al 2000), there is little or no research on what drug treatment clients do to promote or maintain their health outside of clinical settings. This means that "there is little research identifying specific health-promoting strategies among drug users that treatment specialists may use to improve overall intervention plans" (p. 610, Drumm et al 2005).…”

“…Among the 12 studies examining prevalence of anxiety disorders through pre-DSM-IV criteria, 7 concerned opiatedependent subjects in methadone treatment (Abbott, Weller & Walker, 1994;Brooner et al, 1997;Callaly, Trauer, Munro, & Whelan, 2001;Magura, Kang, Rosenblum, Handelsman, & Foote, 1998;Mason et al, 1998;Milby et al, 1996;Musselman & Kell, 1995). Three studies recruited subjects in treatment including detoxification (Mirin, Weiss, Griffin, & Michael, 1991), detoxification or methadone programs (Van Limbeek, Wouters, Kaplan, Geerlings, & Van Alem, 1992), and methadone or naltrexone programs (Pozzi, Bacigalupi, & Tempesta, 1997).…”

“…In particular, depression is a well-known antecedent of suicidal ideation among PWID (Armstrong et al, 2014;Jin et al, 2013). The prevalence of depression among PWID ranged from 25% to 84% in the USA, Canada, Australia, and India (Armstrong et al, 2013b;Callaly et al, 2001;Conner et al, 2008;Heimer et al, 2014;Mackesy-Amiti et al, 2012;Pilowsky et al, 2011;Springer, 2012;Teesson et al, 2005). In China, it ranged from 75.3% to 92.4% (Gu et al, 2010) and was even higher among PLWH (Sun et al, 2014;Wang et al, 2014).…”
