“…The technique of measuring hearing thresholds is standardized (American National Standards Institute, ANSI) and thresholds are expressed in decibel hearing level (dBHL), whereby zero dBHL at a given frequency is defined as the average threshold in 18-year-old people with history free of otological disease. Although the prevalence of presbycusis is highly variable depending on the pure-tone averaged frequencies and the classification system used [6], approximately half of adults in their seventh decade shows hearing loss that is severe enough to affect communication [7]; similarly, speech intelligibility decreases progressively with age-related hearing loss [8], both in quiet and with high noise levels [9].
