Prevalence of Prediabetes Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States, 2005-2016

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Individuals with prediabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease. The incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the US adolescent population have increased in the last decade. Therefore, it is important to monitor the prevalence of prediabetes and varying levels of glucose tolerance to assess the future risk of type 2 diabetes in the youngest segment of the population.OBJECTIVE To examine the prevalence of impaired fasting gluc… Show more

“…The present findings emphasize the role of obesity as a major risk factor for developing prediabetes in SA. These findings are in accordance with prior reports from SA 31 and worldwide 29,30,32,46 . Lifestyle interventions, including weight reduction, lowered the risk of progression to diabetes mellitus by 58% in the Diabetes Prevention Program 47 .…”

“…Although we could not show an association between vitamin D levels and the risk of prediabetes or HbA1c levels, we have shown a clear association between prediabetes and BMI. The effect of vitamin D levels on glucose metabolism and HbA1c levels might be much lower than other well-established risk factors, such as obesity [29][30][31][32][33] . Such information will help in directing prevention efforts in a cost-effective manner.…”

“…Young adults can show risks for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease with a clustering of biological risks including prediabetes and metabolic syndrome. From the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2005(NHANES -2006(NHANES through 2015(NHANES -2016, the rate of pre-diabetes was 16% in young adults, and pre-diabetes rates were associated with elevated central adiposity and systolic blood pressure, less favorable levels of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and lower insulin sensitivity [1]. Furthermore, the rates of metabolic syndrome in young adults were 23.2% from NHANES 2007-2012 [2].…”

“…The prevalence of obesity in adults is 38% and up to 30% in children. 1 Recently it was found that 18% of adolescents and 24% of young adults have prediabetes. 1 Non-invasive assessment of diastolic function remains challenging in the pediatric and young adult population as the ndings of diastolic dysfunction may be the end point for long term exposure to harmful events and thus early detection is important to prevent development of heart failure symptoms.…”
