Prevalence of pigeon rotavirus infections: animal exhibitions as a risk factor for pigeon flocks

Abstract: A total of 289 cloacal swabs from pigeons from 29 different breeders in Germany were collected. In addition, samples from pigeons exhibited at shows were collected. The detailed health status of the pigeon flocks was recorded. Samples were analysed for the presence of the recently discovered pigeon rotavirus and pigeon circovirus. Pigeon rotavirus was found in 10.3% and pigeon circoviruses was found in 65.5% of sampled pigeon lofts. The study revealed a strong relationship between the attendance of shows and t… Show more

“…In another study of Slovenian racing pigeons, results showed that 93.3% of cloacal and 96.7% of oropharyngeal samples were positive for PiCV [ 34 ] and are comparable with results obtained in other countries [ 21 ]. The findings showed a high prevalence of infections with PiCV, a pathogen that could cause immunosuppression, which may favor secondary infections [ 38 ]. In the present study, PiCV was detected in all flocks but not in all categories in each flock.…”

“…Dose response studies using the simian rotavirus strain SA11 showed that a dose as low as 10 2 plaque forming units induced virus replication and disease in mice [43]. Although such data is not available for pigeon-type RVA, it is conceivable to speculate that few infected birds present in a racing pigeon transport, at an exhibition, or in a loft may be sufficient for rapid viral spread to other pigeons [34].…”

“…Additionally, the mechanism by which PiCV infection contributes to the development of YPDS has also been described in various descriptions of certainties, ranging from “assumed to induce immunosuppression”, “possibly by immunosuppression”, to “causes profound immunosuppression”. To us, these degrees of variability among these descriptors do not seem to correlate with time.…”
