Prevalence of Periodontal Bone Loss in Brazilian Adolescents through Interproximal Radiography

Abstract: Purpose. The aim of this study was to verify the prevalence of alveolar bone loss in Brazilian adolescents through the interproximal X-rays analysis. Methods. Bilateral and standardized interproximal (bitewing) X-rays were performed in 15-year-old adolescents (n = 326), and the processing of films and measurements of alveolar bone levels were accomplished by a single examiner. A distance between the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and the alveolar bone crest more than 2 mm was considered as periodontal bone loss.… Show more

“…Numerous studies have examined alveolar bone loss and its features at different sites and in different ways; some have addressed the furcation areas, whereas others have examined only the proximal defects [ 19 , 20 ] or labial and lingual defects around the teeth. Published articles have shown an increasing rate of tooth loss in elderly males [ 21 ].…”

“…In this study, the majority of sites that displayed bony defects around first molars and incisors were horizontal rather than vertical, and the difference was statistically significant ( p = 0.00), at ( n = 37 vs. n = 19) and ( n = 434 vs. n = 56) for molars and incisors, respectively. This could be explained by the slow progression of the disease and bone loss process [ 19 , 29 ]. The majority of horizontal bone loss was seen on mandibular incisors, which had ( n = 320 vs. n = 37) vertical defects, with a total of ( n = 213) sites on the labial aspects.…”

“…The prevalence of vertical defect was higher in male patients (14.95%) when compared to female patients (8.2%) and also it was rare in patients with dental awareness (de Toledo et al 2012). 4 Vertical defects are commonly associated with posterior teeth (Baljoon et al), 5 with the higher prevalence in mandibular posterior teeth (33.8%) (Vrotsos et al, Kasaj et al). 6,7 Vertical defects are commonly associated with molars with higher prevalence of crater formation (26.5%), followed by circumferential defects (23.4%) and 3 wall defects (20.08%) (Wu et al).…”
