Prevalence of perinatal asphyxia in East and Central Africa: systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Background: Birth asphyxia leads to about 4 million neonatal deaths every year around the globe. But, the pooled prevalence of asphyxia was not yet collated in East and Central African countries. Hence, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of perinatal asphyxia in Central and East Africa.

“…Moreover, the higher prevalence in the far North could also be from the cultural practices; such as poor antenatal care, home delivery by unskilled attendants, inability of women to access hospital care without the husbands' permission etc. The study prevalence however is similar to the prevalence of 15.9% reported from a meta-analysis 15 and review undertaken in East and Central Africa. Most mothers who delivered babies with birth asphyxia in this study booked for ANC, majority of the mothers had no maternal illness during pregnancy and they delivered via spontaneous vaginal delivery.…”

“…This could be due the fact that asphyxia is caused by interruption of blood flow to the placenta that could further decrease blood flow to the vital organs like the kidney, brain, heart, and lung [ 51 , 52 ]. Another possible explanation for this is that the presence of high prevalence of perinatal asphyxia in East and Central Africa could be associated with increased incidence of NM in SSA [ 53 ]. Respiratory distress syndrome is also found to increase the hazard of NM of neonates treated in the NICUs of SSA.…”

“…The prevalence of perinatal asphyxia is ~2 per 1000 live births in developed countries, but the number of those affected rises to 26 per 1000 in developing countries [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Perinatal asphyxia occurs worldwide in approximately 4 million newborns annually [ 7 ] and is responsible for 23% of all infant deaths and 8% of child deaths [ 8 ].…”
